The Thai government considers that as the covid epidemic eases, the local tourism activities may be levied on tourism tax, which is estimated to be no more than 300 baht (about S$13) per person.

The Minister of Tourism and Sports of Thailand said that a tourism tax had been proposed in 2019 year, but it was postponed due to the covid epidemic, and it is considered that it is appropriate to reconsider it at an appropriate time.

Tourism tax is part of Thailand ’s 20-year national strategic plan, which requires government departments to maintain regular income and stabilize the national economy. The tax will be allocated to the tourism industry fund to assist in the reconstruction and development of tourism facilities, and to provide more security for tourists, the planned tourism tax will include insurance covering covid treatment. The tourism tax is expected to implement in the fourth quarter of this year.

Thailand had 39.8 million tourists in 2019, a record high. The Tourism Authority of Thailand predicts that the number of visitors this year will be only 14 to 16 million, the lowest level in the past 14 years.
